Where Nevada sign permit applications actually land
Clark County, not the City of Las Vegas, governs much of the Las Vegas Valley — including the Strip.
This is the single most important fact about Nevada permitting: the Las Vegas Strip is not in the City of Las Vegas. It sits in unincorporated Clark County, and sign permits there are issued by the Clark County Department of Building and Fire Prevention with zoning review under county code. A submittal prepared for the City of Las Vegas for a Strip address goes to the wrong counter entirely.
The City of Las Vegas covers downtown and areas north and west, with its own sign ordinance including provisions for the Fremont Street area. Henderson and North Las Vegas are separate municipalities with their own codes, and Henderson in particular applies stricter suburban design standards than the county.
In the north, Reno and Sparks are separate cities within Washoe County. Carson City operates as a consolidated municipality. The Nevada Department of Transportation regulates outdoor advertising along state highways and signage in state rights-of-way.
